He remained fond of her and spoke well of her in her later career as a theatre actress; he used his influence to help and encourage her. In October 1880, Langtry sold many of her possessions to meet her debts, allowing Edward Langtry to avoid a declaration of bankruptcy.

When Millais painted her portrait he insisted she wear the black dress from their first meeting. He also had her hold a crimson lily, a flower native to Jersey, and from then on she was generally known as "the Jersey Lily". When the portrait was hung at the Royal Academy, it had to be roped off to protect it from the crowds eager to see the woman whom Millais called "the most beautiful woman on earth". Langtry’s popularity started to wane when Sarah Bernhardt, a French stage actress, arrived in London. Her “golden voice” and talent on stage brought her as much acclaim as Langtry’s beauty did—something even the prince took notice of.
Lilian Bond played her in The Westerner , and Ava Gardner in The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean . Bean was played by Walter Brennan in the former, and by Paul Newman in the latter film. In the 1944 Universal film The Scarlet Claw, Lillian Gentry, the first murder victim, wife of Lord William Penrose and former actress, is an oblique reference to Langtry.

Although from 1895 the building was operated as the Cadogan Hotel, she would stay in her former bedroom there. A blue plaque on the hotel commemorates this, and the hotel's restaurant is named 'Langtry's' in her honour. Today the buildings retain their period appearance, but modifications and additions have been made, and the complex is now multi-occupancy.

Famously, Langtry was said to be the inspiration for Irene Adler from Sherlock Holmes, who was one of the few who managed to outwit the famed detective. Her fascinating life and string of relationships have been the subject of many television productions. She took an interest in thoroughbred horseracing and quickly amassed a stable of horses that she used to race and earn prize money. During this time, Langtry met George Alexander Baird, a rich Scotsman who was active in the horseracing circuit. Leaving Jeanne Marie behind with her mother, Langtry returned to London.
The house was, however, demolished in 1971 to make way for the Alexandra Road Estate. During her stage career, she became friendly with William Ewart Gladstone (1809–1898), who was the British Prime Minister on four occasions during the reign of Queen Victoria. In her memoirs Langtry says that she first met Gladstone when she was posing for her portrait at Millais' studio. He told her, "In your professional career, you will receive attacks, personal and critical, just and unjust. Bear them, never reply, and, above all, never rush into print to explain or defend yourself." Early in 1882, Langtry quit the production at the Haymarket and started her own company, touring the UK with various plays. American impresario Henry Abbey arranged a tour in the United States for Langtry.
